What is magick and how does it work?

Judika Illes puts it best she when she says in her book, Pure Magic,

"Magic consists of a dialogue between Earth and yourself, a dialogue whereby you are able to express your desires, receive and recognize a response and are then able to make your wishes and desires come true... What is required is an awareness of the natural rhythms, energies, powers and patterns of Earth and her diverse inhabitants. These rhythms and powers are then manipulated in a harmonious and conscious manner to help manifest your goals."

'The bottom line is that magic is communication: communication between yourself, Earth and all the other life forms with whom we share our Earth Mother." Pure Magic, Judika Illes, p.xi.

What magick isn't!

Magic doesn't replace traditional or non-traditional therapies such as seeing your doctor, the need for exercise, to eat well, developing your social skills or deepening your relationship with yourself. It is not for the lazy or for people who want a witch to "wave their magic wand" in hopes of all the weight dropping off or all their issues being fixed. There are no quick fixes in the realm of emotional and spiritual health. Magick can be a wonderful part of your healing journey and help put you in greater touch with your self and your soul. It can help you with many things but it does not take away your personal responsibility or negate you actively creating a great life for yourself. Magick is an assistant, not a spooky cure-all.

Magick is best paired with inspired action, which means taking proactive steps to improve your wellbeing as well as taking advantage of the synchronicities and opportunties that come your way (as a result of the spell work done on your behalf). * Even though modern, eclectic magick has overlap with meditation, manifestation practices, energy work and visualising techniques, magick is not The Secret or a cosmic cash machine. The Secret is part of New Age philosphies. Some witchcraft and New Age philisophes have overlap but they are not the same. "Any book that tells you to simply read a few lines and wait for the results is not teaching magick - fantasy, yes, but not magick." (Nocturnal Witchcraft, Konstantinos p.147). Magick needs to involve the physical realm (taking action to achieve your goals) as well as your thoughts (what you think about and how you focus your thoughts). The astral and mental aspects of magick are engaged when you focus on what you want in detail and use your imagination to empower your thoughts but picturing, for example, having already achieving your goal and how it would feel, taste and look.

Even though I engage all these aspects in spell work, you need to as well.

You already know what you want, but can you imagine having achieved your goal? What would it feel like? Look like? Picture it in as much detail as you can. Do this often. You can improve this process by writing out your goal as if it's already happened (in the past tense). Put this written manifestation some place where you will see it often. Say it aloud to yourself.

From there you need to ask yourself what you could be doing on a practical level to get you closer to that goal. Do you need to improve your communication skills? Do some shadow work? See a therapist? Work on your past traumas? Would seeing a reiki healer long term assist you? Try everything and go with that resonates with you.

This is general advice. You can't meditate away difficult feelings or people. But you can book a support session with me where we can discuss what actions might be best for you to take to better support your heath and the spell.

Do your spells work?

People often ask me how I can tell if a spell is working. First off, I would be able to feel during my ritual work if there were lots of blocks or the spell fell apart energetically. I would then tell you so that we could work out why. There is always a reason for this.

My spells do work. By that I mean very seriously that the energy I create and direct out into the world to affect you and any other people involved, does work. I’m capable of creating my own spells and drawing from witchcraft’s rich history to perform magick. But, and this is very important, magick and energy are not guaranteed to work in the ways you exactly want. The energy, spirits and the gods and goddesses I work with can’t be controlled. They can be worked with and directed, but witches do not fully control the source of life and energy themselves. Life its self is chaotic and so too is magick. The way it creates change and manifests, if it can be counted on to do anything, is to give you what you need and reveal deeps truths if you let it.

Are your spells safe? (do they backfire?) None of my spells have backfired - usually that happens to people because they are doing petty or cruel spells and the negative energy seeped into their life rather than their target's. I don’t do spells like that so there is nothing nasty that will come back to you or me.

Spells are safe in that there is no punishment from any cosmic deities for whatever spells a person casts. It’s a Christian myth that has seeped into Wicca, that you'll be met punishment if you invoke your personal power and effect the world with your actions (especially if you do a spell that goes beyond the puritanical bounds of moral behaviour. Which means defending yourself in any way really). I’m not a Buddhist or a Wiccan, I follow the Olds Ways and we don’t believe in such punishment or find that any bad things happen to use for using magic for our own purposes.

Everyone has to decide what they can and can’t live with morally. There are no external, cosmic punishments. People who do petty or cruel hearted spells are likely to find that they feel bitter or poisoned by it because they are spending energy wallowing in hate and not working on their hurt feelings or woundings.

I hope this helps you understand more about magick and what it is we are embarking on together.
