“To be a witch is to demand freedom from the patriarchy,” Rachael declares strongly. “It is to believe in your own sexual freedom and right to shape your own future to your best ability. To take hold of your power in ways that are truly empowering.”
For Rachael, this empowerment translates into her craft. She sees herself as an agent for change and healing as those who seek her services are usually the broken hearted and distressed. We sat in the corner of a small, bustling café as she told me her journey with the craft. She was decked out in all black, a fur coat proudly draped over her shoulders. Her dark, arched brows danced as she spoke passionately about her craft that often consists of assisting her clients, often females, in finding their own power. One of the core philosophy in her practice is to help women without harming other women. "Often I would build into the spell ethical safeguards ... an ethos that ‘if this is for the greatest good and to the benefit of both parties then may they come together but if it’s not then may their feelings for each other dissipate and may they part amicably’.”
She speaks of her craft with pride, her rings reflected bits of light as she declared, “I cast spells that help my clients get what they need, even if in the end they didn’t get what they initially sought me out for.” She explains that she often gets young girls who ask for a separation spells to be done on their exes. However, instead of casting spells that would harm another, she focuses her work on helping her client grow and learn. She expresses women’s tendency to bring each other down rather than empowering one another, a problem that stems from patriarchy. If used wisely, Rachael believes that witchcraft can be used to push against this. Thus, she focuses her craft on assisting, helping women find their power in situations as much as possible, to be able to find their inner strength and use it as a force of change.
